Why do we choose organic mattresses?

One of the reasons is being following the modern popular trends, going green and being environmentally-friendly. For other people it is not only a trend, but an entire lifestyle, especially when it is constantly easier nowadays to get access to “green” products and they are becoming cheaper as well. Whatever the reason – we should be aware what are the benefits of using an organic mattress compare to usual ones.

A typical non-organic mattress is made of a combination of cotton and foam, both of which contain harmful chemicals that are easily released into the atmosphere of your home. Many people don’t realize that usual mattresses contain flame retardants and other materials that can constantly release gases into the air, potentially harming one’s health. Thankfully, nowadays we  have a safe, healthy alternative as organic mattresses don’t contain any harmful chemicals. Different ways of elimination of any amount of poisonous substances from our everyday life can sum up with much healthier homes and lifestyles.

One may argue that usual mattresses are also made from cotton. Yes, but processing of cotton for non-organic mattresses involves many chemicals. Some of these chemicals, including formaldehyde and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), can cause allergies, are known cancer factors, and can be attributed to certain childhood diseases like asthma. Conventional mattresses are breeding grounds for mold, mildew and dust mites which can cause moderate to severe allergic reactions in some people.

What is also worth mentioning is the use of organic wool in the manufacture of organic mattresses. Organic wool is added to the outer shell of an organic mattress to give it fire retardant properties replacing fire retardant chemicals like PBDEs used in standard mattresses. PBDEs have properties similar to DDT and have been shown to affect brain development and growth in children. This is additional feature showing a necessity of a natural alternative.

To summarize, wool, cotton, rubber, hemp, and other raw materials are the basic ingredients of organic mattresses. They are coming from all over the world: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Belgium, England, France, and even the US. The choice of organic mattresses lowers use of chemicals put into the environment by growing and processing cotton as well as prevents these chemicals from traveling into your home. The greatest benefit to the environment is the fact that the mattress can be completely recycled once it has been worn out.

Types of organic mattresses

There are two types of organic mattresses: organic cotton and organic rubber (also known as natural latex, not to be mistaken with synthetic latex). An organic cotton mattress differs from standard mattresses just with the quality of the cotton used, build with springs and cotton on the outside and on the inside. An organic rubber mattress, on the other hand, has no springs, his core is made from natural rubber from Malaysia, reminds foam mattresses with a core of rubber.

Out of the two organic mattress types, a cotton organic mattress is the most popular as it is more affordable. Organic cotton composes the outside shell, the inside filling, and even the threads. They are made from cotton grown without chemical fertilizers and sprays that was not stripped of its natural wax, once picked. The natural wax gives the cloth an off-white color that maybe an indication of natural cotton processing, and it lightens with a few washes.

The rubber organic mattresses are covered with organic cotton but the inside is a six to seven inch thick core of medium or firm rubber with holes put in it for a softer texture. The rubber for this type of organic mattress originates from a Malaysian rubber tree called Hevea Brasiliensis. Although the organic rubber mattress will have holes in it once put together, mildew, mold, and bacteria cannot live in rubber core – an important factor to high moisture climate.

Demand for mattresses made from natural materials is increasing, so even well known brands of original mattress companies, such as Serta, are turning to organic. Not surprisingly, organic mattresses manufacturers are gaining on popularity and their products are becoming more affordable. The basic organic mattress is said to last more than 20 years and additionally come with a very valuable warranty that will last almost as long as the lifespan of the mattress itself. Organic mattress cotton pads and waterproof covers are additional gadgets complementing organic mattresses and protecting their surface for even better longevity.

A good quality, natural, organic latex mattresses are very comfortable, providing the necessary orthopedic support required for healthy body restoration. They also have much better longevity compare to conventional mattresses outlasting them by 20 years or more when treated with care. Their higher price maybe an issue but considering the health benefits and longevity of natural mattresses, they appear to be the better bargain.
